Anyone walking through the doors of Jaumann’s Südwind on Sylt notices right away: this building isn’t trying to be a classic hotel. It feels different: more personal, warmer. Almost like arriving at a friend’s home. That was Elisa and Gerrit’s idea when they bought the small hotel in Westerland together with Elisa’s parents in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. The fact that it was on Sylt was pure chance.

“When we were renovating, we were always thinking: Would we feel comfortable here ourselves?”

The result is a hotel that not only invites guests to arrive, but to settle in and explore. Many visitors stop, look closely – and then instinctively reach for their cell phones.
“Guests photograph things so often because they get inspiration for their own home,” says Gerrit. This is exactly what appeals to the two of them: the fact that their concept not only works, but is carried forward – into their guests’ own four walls.
Colors, surfaces and materials never appear staged – they are perfectly coordinated. They create a calm, harmonious atmosphere typical of Sylt without falling into maritime stereotypes. Instead, a modern yet classic, personal overall appearance is created – one that you can both see and feel.

The purchase was followed by a difficult period between renovation and lockdown. Instead of focusing on distance and standardization, the couple consciously opted for closeness, individuality and a clear goal: to create a place that feels just like their own home. By their side on this mission: the right painting contractor to help them cope with the difficult times of the pandemic. High-quality products from Brillux were used, because quality is particularly important in areas that are used by many people.

The renovation period was marked by unusual circumstances – and it was precisely these that had a lasting impact on the project. During the pandemic, a close working relationship developed with the local tradespeople. “It was lockdown, a very strange atmosphere on the island. We formed a really great community with the tradespeople and, together, watched the hotel grow,” says Elisa. This unique situation gave rise not only to a joint project but also to a genuine relationship based on trust. This close coordination is reflected throughout the hotel today. Every decision seems carefully thought through, every room tells its own story – and yet everything comes together to form a harmonious whole.
Today, Jaumann’s Südwind is a small, family-run bed & breakfast that consciously focuses on personality. It’s not about meeting a hotel standard – it’s about creating a place that’s real: “This was our first little baby, which we’ve been fortunate enough to fill with heaps of personality,” says Elisa.
A place where guests arrive, settle in and breathe – and perhaps head home with some new ideas.
Because sometimes, the most beautiful home is the one where you simply feel at ease.
