Extensive refurbishment enabled the Erbeskopf Middle School Plus in Thalfang to relieve itself of the overbearing atmosphere of a concrete building dating from the 70s, without having to relinquish its architectural heritage. The three-floor hall, with its corridors on four sides and expanded elevator has been redecorated in the colors white, beige, and light gray.

The two existing freestanding staircases, as well as the balustrades, have retained their original light gray and have been adjusted to meet current legislation with new parapets at chest height. The existing parapet relief in the main hall, as well as the old wall tiles, have been preserved and integrated into the new, bright color concept. The parapet reliefs dating from the 70s have been painted white and integrated into the new material and color concept.

The height of the space has been highlighted with rounded, suspended lights in various sizes. The lights establish a connection to the various floors. The new elevator, with its large, minimalistic clock, also accentuates the hall as a vertical element.

Deliberate color accents in the hall are carried across all levels through the wall projections. The colors light blue, turquoise, green and yellow green are present, used in the rubber flooring in the classrooms and administrative spaces. The teaching kitchen and the art and science classrooms also use these four colors, matching the floor colors to the walls. In the busy hall, the tough wall tiles came back into play.

Similarly to the creamy beige tiles, the other walls in the building’s corridors were also painted the same subtle, light color shade.
This meant all the old substance and the existing elements could be brought into the new, light, and friendly, fresh color concept.
