It is only the fifth time that the Brillux Design Award has been presented, but it can still look back on over 25 years of history. That’s because the idea for the international competition came from the German Facade Award. Winners from 1991 to 2016 have shown just how much potential colored facade design can bring, to offer improved residential quality as well as quality of life in public spaces.

The competition aims to promote technical collaborations with architects and tradespeople. Just like in previous years, both architects and builders, as well as trades, are invited to get involved by submitting exemplary projects. Projects from all around the world are welcome to enter provided they use Brillux products. With over 200 branches in Germany, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Switzerland, Brillux has become an expert international partner for trades, architects and planners. In addition to facades, the Brillux Design Award also looks at the best interior design.

Projects that have been implemented with Brillux products in the period from January 2025 to December 2026 and that stand out by featuring excellent design and architecture, as well as high standards of workmanship, are welcome to enter. A firm commitment to building culture as well as the preservation and strengthening of an identity-building, livable environment will find its place in the Brillux Design Award 2027. The Brillux Design Award expert jury will gather in March 2027. The judging panel includes independent specialists with international experience from the fields of architecture, interior design and trades.

Architects and interior designers, as well as those from the fields of skilled crafts and building are welcome to submit their work. Shared applications are desired. The Brillux Design Award 2027 is internationally recognized. Projects that have been implemented using Brillux products, whether on the facade or as part of the interior design, can be submitted.

The Brillux Design Award 2027 has prize money of €25,000. In addition to awarding the prize money, Brillux will also provide professional photo material of the prize-winning projects, as well as editorial coverage for local daily press, free of charge for the winners’ own use.

The expert jury of the Brillux Design Award will nominate the three most outstanding submissions in a total of five categories, then select the respective winners from each of these shortlists.

In addition to the prize money, the award winners will benefit from a large media presence.

Following the award ceremony, editorial articles will be published in journals from the fields of architecture, interior design and trade.

The Brillux Design Award is presented in Münster in Autumn 2027 as part of a festive ceremony in the LWL Museum of Art and Culture. The multiple award-winning museum designed by architect Volker Staab was opened in 2014. It will be the inspiring backdrop to the event, where the winning projects will be announced.

All projects submitted will be judged by a qualified panel of experts, consisting of architects, interior designers and tradespeople, who will go on to nominate the finalists in a transparent selection procedure. The jury will pay particular attention to the harmonious interaction of components, materials, colors and the successful integration of the facade into the architectural environment. In the interior architecture field, the focus is set to lie more on the strong implementation of color concepts in accordance with the requirements of use and interior design. The jury sitting is not open to the public. Their decisions are final. The jury decides by a simple majority and will justify their decisions with a simple vote. There is no right of appeal.

Buildings can be submitted in the categories mentioned to win Brillux Design Award 2027 prizes worth a total of €25,000. The range includes updates to existing buildings, extensive modernization measures, through to complex tasks for new residential, commercial or administrative or public buildings. Existing and new builds can also be submitted if they have been wholly or partially refurbished with ETICS to be more energy-efficient. From a technical perspective, at the time of implementation, any specifications that were valid at the time must have been met or exceeded. Professional, quality implementation of the ETICS facade is considered just as highly as the creative design. Historical buildings and stylish facades, as well as interior design concepts in residential and working spaces receive awards in additional categories.

Residential buildings

The category includes residential buildings with unique colored facade designs as well as renovations of existing buildings and new builds alike. All building types, from single-family homes or apartment buildings, terraces, historical buildings to high-rise buildings, can be submitted. Buildings with mixed use of housing and commerce are also assigned to this category if the residential element is predominant. How the building fits into the inner city or residential surroundings plays an important role in the evaluation.

Public buildings and commercial buildings

This category includes exemplary facade designs of public buildings such as schools, kindergartens, social institutions and museums – both existing as well as new buildings. Temporary public usage can also be assigned to this category. Buildings featuring exemplary design, such as office and commercial buildings, factories and warehouses, as well as residential and commercial buildings with predominantly business usage, are also evaluated.

Historic buildings/stylish facades

When it comes to historic buildings and stylish facades, a harmonious interplay of components, materials and colors is a key factor for assessment. Historic preservation as well as integration into urban spaces are further aspects for consideration. Renovations and modernizations of buildings from post-war modernism can also be submitted in this category.

Interior design concepts for home and lifestyle

Harmonious interior concepts, that are especially fitting for the user’s respective needs, can be submitted in this category. Submissions stem from all areas of everyday life, from housing and nursing care facilities, to exhibition spaces and cultural monuments.

Workspace interior design concepts

This category covers contemporary interior design concepts for workspaces that notably contribute to a good working atmosphere thanks to their color design. In addition to offices, this includes all areas where work is undertaken – from schools to factories.

Only applications that are fully completed and submitted on time can participate in the competition.

Eligible projects can be submitted online to the competition at www.brillux.de/design-award.

It is advisable to use high-quality property images when submitting, in order to provide the jury with the best basis for assessment. In the event of nomination, the property submitted will be photographed on behalf of Brillux by a professional photographer after the jury session.

By participating, the architect, client, craftsperson, planner and other parties involved agree to the documentation and publication of the works submitted. Work may only be submitted for which the submitter(s) is/are the sole owner(s) of the rights. The participants allow Brillux to publish the submitted work to document the competition and in particular the prizes awarded in both online and in print media, and in particular, to use the above for the reports of media partners. The participants agree that Brillux may use an official Brillux photographer to capture images of the property submitted, provided it is nominated by the jury. These may be reproduced, distributed and published for communication purposes in all known types of use and in all media by Brillux and third parties. These rights apply without restriction to territory, time or content.

Participants in the Brillux Design Award agree that photos taken or videos recorded as part of or relating to the event may be reproduced, distributed and used for communication purposes in all known types of usage and in all types of media. These rights apply without restriction to territory, time or content. Participants declare that the submitted works are free of third-party rights or that the publication/use of the works has been approved by third-party rights holders and they indemnify Brillux against any claims by third parties.

The responsible body within the meaning of the German Federal Data Protection Law is Brillux GmbH & Co. KG. The data submitted with the application is stored electronically and used to process the application to the Brillux Design Award.
