Particularly critical areas include corners, wall surfaces behind cabinets or curtains and uninsulated exterior walls. In addition, room corners on the exterior wall, transitions from the exterior wall to the ceiling and window sills act as thermal bridges.

In the past, leaky window joints provided “permanent ventilation”. But today’s windows are sealed and prevent heat and moisture from escaping. The single glazing of the past led to cold windows and condensation, which was drained away via gutters. Today’s double- or triple glazed windows no longer serve as “condensation separators”. And that’s why moisture has to be removed in a different way: through consistent and regular ventilation.

Several times a day, you should briefly ventilate the home by opening windows and doors wide for 2 to 15 minutes, depending on the outside temperature. As a general rule: during frost for 2–3 minutes, at 0–5°C for about 5 minutes, at 5–10°C for 5–10 minutes and at 10–15°C for about 15 minutes. Leaving the windows tilted for a long time doesn’t help, as it only directs warm air outside. After showering or cooking, briefly open the window to allow moisture to escape or use the extractor hood. Proper ventilation prevents the walls from becoming saturated and significantly reduces energy losses.

Mold doesn’t like dryness. In order to prevent fungal growth or remove the basis for life of existing mold, the affected surfaces must be dried as quickly as possible – by heating. The causes of the moisture that has occurred should also be remedied as soon as possible.
