Professionally Prevent & Combat Mould - Brillux

Mold is part of our natural environment and also occurs indoors. A certain spore contamination in living spaces cannot be prevented, as they enter through normal window ventilation. But if mold growth is not stopped indoors, it can cause health problems. That’s why it’s important to quickly eliminate mold and prevent it from returning. To help you advise your customers correctly, we have compiled all the information on the topic of “mold protection” here!

Where exactly does mold come from?

Mold infestation in living spaces is usually caused by excessive air humidity. Causes can include structural defects such as leaky roofs, cracks in masonry, unsuitable facade render or defective gutters. Moisture in new buildings, condensation due to thermal bridges or water damage from pipes also contribute to this. But above all, the behavior of the users plays a crucial role.

In the past, leaky window joints provided “permanent ventilation”. But today’s windows are sealed and prevent heat and moisture from escaping. The single glazing of the past led to cold windows and condensation, which was drained away via gutters. Today’s double- or triple glazed windows no longer serve as “condensation separators”. And that’s why moisture has to be removed in a different way: through consistent and regular ventilation.
Several times a day, you should briefly ventilate the home by opening windows and doors wide for 2 to 15 minutes, depending on the outside temperature. As a general rule: during frost for 2–3 minutes, at 0–5°C for about 5 minutes, at 5–10°C for 5–10 minutes and at 10–15°C for about 15 minutes. Leaving the windows tilted for a long time doesn’t help, as it only directs warm air outside. After showering or cooking, briefly open the window to allow moisture to escape or use the extractor hood. Proper ventilation prevents the walls from becoming saturated and significantly reduces energy losses.
