The heat pump – how to maximize efficiency

Are you planning to install a heat pump or would you like to find out more about them? That’s a good idea. With a heat pump, you can save money, heat more efficiently and do your bit for the planet. But only in really well-insulated buildings! Because only an effective thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) allows you to keep the heat pump as small and therefore as cost-effective as possible.

Why does a heat pump only work efficiently in an insulated house?

A heat pump extracts heat from the environment and converts it into heating energy, but requires electricity to do so. It consumes one kilowatt hour of electricity to produce 2.5 to 4.5 kilowatt hours of heat. However, in a poorly insulated house, a significant amount of heat is lost, which can cause even the best systems to operate inefficiently, leading to potential energy losses of over one-third. Economical heat pump operation is therefore only possible with good insulation.

First insulate, then heat

Logical conclusion: the use of a composite thermal insulation system is the first step, especially for old buildings. Therefore, before starting any work on the heating system or the house, the most important tip in terms of the order of work is: only choose the right heat pump for your home after the professionals from the painting company have completed the insulation work!

Preparing for a heat pump

The ETICS expert from Brillux recommends insulating the roof first, then the facade and finally the basement ceiling and/or attic.
