The fire station in Bühl am Alpsee demonstrates how a consistent vision can lead to a remarkable building: functional, characteristic of its location and environmentally conscious. The intentionally reduced cubature eliminates unnecessary excess while demonstrating a great deal of architectural finesse. This makes the project a role model for sustainable planning and construction.
The single-story building was erected on a concrete core-activated floor slab made entirely of wood – sourced from the urban forest and processed at the local sawmill. Even the facade elements and the cladding of the training room are made from the offcuts of the same wood. The volunteer members of the fire service carried out the painting work themselves – community spirit being a key element of the design.
The distinctive red wooden facade was coated using Lignodur Xylodol 540. The colorless prime coat was followed by the red-tinted top coat. Linseed oil-based wood oil provides long-lasting and environmentally friendly protection for the local wood. In combination with the green roof, the photovoltaic system and the geothermal probes, this creates a cohesive overall concept – environmentally friendly, locally sourced and future-oriented.
The linseed oil-based wood oil was initially applied as a colorless prime coat. Next came the top coat of Lignodur Xylodol 540 in a striking fire engine red, which further enhances the natural wooden structure.
The overall ecological concept, characterized by a strong regional focus, is evident in every aspect. The wood came from the urban forest and was sawn on site. The building’s silhouette blends harmoniously into the landscape.
